چکیده
The first hypothesis, that argument projection is aspectually driven, finds perhaps its earliest explicit statement as Tenny’s (1987, 1992, 1994) Aspectual Interface Hypothesis and has subsequently been quite widely adopted (e.g., Arad 1998, Borer 1998). Proponents of this hypothesis often establish a connection between direct objecthood and notions such as telicity (van Hout 1996, Ritter & Rosen 1998), incremental theme (Rothstein 2000), measure (Tenny 1994), or subject of result (Borer 1998). This hypothesis is tied explicitly to the phenomena in (1)-(2) by van

L1 Transfer in L2 Acquisition of the There-Insertion Construction by Mandarin EFL Learners
This study examined the role of the native language (L1) transfer in a non-native language (L2) acquisition of the there-insertion construction at the syntax-semantics interface. Specifically, the study investigated if Mandarin EFL learners would make overgeneralization errors in the situation where an L1 argument structure constitutes a superset of its L2 counterpart. Verbs of existence and ap...
متن کاملLexicon Uniformity and the causative alternation
With respect to the first question, the perceived additional semantic complexity of the transitive or ‘causative’ variant—its explicit association with a notion of cause—may suggest that the transitive variant is derived from the intransitive or ‘anticausative’ variant1 by the addition of a CAUSE operator (e.g., Dowty 1979: 91; Härtl 2003; Lakoff 1966; Parsons 1990). This position is reinforced...
متن کاملAn Event Structure Account of English Resultatives
Current syntactic accounts of English resultatives are based on the assumption that result XPs are predicated of underlying direct objects. This assumption has helped to explain the presence of reflexive pronouns with some intransitive verbs but not others and the apparent lack of result XPs predicated of subjects of transitive verbs. We present problems for and counterexamples to some of the b...
متن کاملThe Acquisition of Correlates of Unaccusativity in L2 French
The Unaccusative Hypothesis (Perlmutter 1978) maintains that there are two types of intransitive verbs: unergative, where the grammatical subject is the Agent and the verb describes an activity (laugh, run) and unaccusative, where the grammatical subject is the Theme and the verb describes an achievement, accomplishment or state (open, arrive, exist). Levin and Rappaport Hovav (1995) argued tha...
متن کاملReflections on Manner/Result Complementarity
Nonstative verbs from various lexical fields are often classified as either manner or result verbs—a distinction implicated in language acquisition (Behrend 1990, Gentner 1978, Gropen et al. 1991), as well as in argument realization. Intuitively speaking, manner verbs specify as part of their meaning a manner of carrying out an action, while result verbs specify the coming about of a result sta...
